It's accurate to say that Trump's personal security perimeter wasn't violated. However, the outer security perimeter wasn't secured, which allowed Crooks to access the roof of an adjacent building. Add to the mix the debunked allegation that the Secret Service sniper team took the extraordinary step of asking for permission to fire when they had Crooks in their sights. Even so, Crooks had already fired eight rounds by the time he was taken out.
In the wake of the assassination attempt, no Secret Service members were fired, but six were temporarily suspended without pay. SSD Cheatle also resigned under bipartisan pressure. Interestingly, Trump closed the ongoing FBI investigation in November 2025, and DHS then prevented its reopening by designating the investigation and materials as classified.
